Audience in Novi Sad ready for tomorrow’s semi-finals

CEV Challenger, Beach Volleyball tournament of the European Volleyball Federation organized by Vip mobile and the Volleyball Federation of Serbia gathered this week in Novi Sad the best beach volleyball players of old continent. Starting from Wednesday, July 21st, even 57 teams from 25 counties compete for points, ranking at CEV and FIVB lists and valuable prize money. After three days of exciting matches at the Strand beach, tomorrow’s semi-final and final matches will decide on winners of this year’s tournament.

Friday, the first day of the main tourmanent was marked with extremely high temperatures that exhausted players and made matches very difficult. At one point, the sand temperature on the court rose up to 50°C, causing 7 medical time-outs and 3 forfeits. After three played matches, Serbian team Basta/Nikolic did not manage to pass to the next round as they won once, but were beaten twice. Together with seven other teams, they were left out of the competition.

The 16 best ranked team competed today to enter the final competition round. After 18 exciting matches played on two courts during the whole day, places for semi-finals were ensured by last year’s winners Smedins/Caics of Latvia, Pajenk/Zemljak of Slovenia, Germans Kaczmarek/Schneider and Swiss pair Sutter/Chevalier. The young Slovenians already became the favourites of the audience in Novi Sad for their virtuous play, since they entered the semi-finals through qualification matches and won over six top-seeded teams with only one set lost.

The second host team Tesic/Mutapcija that successfully played yesterday against Bulgarians and Ukrainians, was eliminated after being defeated by the Bulgarians Popov/Samoday (17:21, 21:14, 15:13) and the Swiss Sutter-Chevalier (26-24, 22-20).

In the first semi, tomorrow at noon, last year’s winners Smedins/Caics of Latvia will meet Kaczmarek/Schneider of Germany, whilst Pajenk/Zemljak of Slovenia will try out Sutter/Chevalier of Switzerland in a match scheduled for 1 pm. Delivery of trophies and awards is scheduled for 5 p.m., after the final match is played.

The same as last year, Vip mobile provided EUR 12’000 total prize fund for 24 teams that manage to enter the final competition. The best three teams will win gold, silver and bronze medals and prize money forth EUR 1.920 for the first place and EUR 1.560 and EUR 1.200 for the second and third place respectively.
